I think the angling guide is excellent, the new red river closure period doesnt really make much sense (with no catfish closure).
I am quite concerned what this will do to the great reputation Manitoba has built up with Americans and others about being a great destination spot to fish.

Leave opening fishing season as is but make it catch and release only.

Overall a great plan to conserve the populations of most species.

Catching pregnant walleyes in the spring isn't the problem, killing them is... I think you should leave May trophy walleye fishing open, but set the possession limit to zero...

Leave the fishing regulations as they are. The problem is not with the Manitoba Angling Guide. The problems come from over commercial fishing and fish harvester rights. In fact open up fishing for all species all year round. Limits during spawning should be zero.

Addressing Protecting Walleye:
Limit sauger/walleye should be 4.
No fish over 55cm to be retained (need to make exemptions for tournaments)
If you truly wanted to protect the spawn, you can say all Walleye caught must be released between April 15-May 30

Some of the changes proposed are not addressing the actual issue, it is merely taking away opportunities.
Similar to creating a "Pelican Sanctuary" at Lockport. The real issue that needed to be addressed was the poaching that was going on in the area.
So lets address the actual issues .

Targeting recreational fishers who can practice selective harvest and not commercial fishermen who account for a huge percentage of the total harvest not to mention the wasted bi catch is completely ridiculous. This all seems more like a political move than anything.

Re: Licensing

Positives: 1 day licenses offered. Seniors not having to register for a license but to simply provide ID. (same as youth under 16)

Would like to see: 3 year Outdoors card similar to Ontario.
Under 18 no license required. (Similar to Ontario)
No need to carry a paper license.

Size limit on Black Crappies should be 12 inches or 30cm. Many people are keeping 14,15,16 inch crappies and using their full limit when they find a school in the Winter and it has destroyed Crappie populations in the whiteshell. No reason people should be allowed to keep master angler sized fish

live bait being banned is absolutely ridiculous and this cannot happen

I have Fished bass derbies for the last 30 years, i've taken my kids, nephews and friends to derbies. With the new regulations proposed i will not have the opportunity to do this anymore, bass should be left alone or make an exception for bass derbies.

If I take my son or grandson fishing he should have a limit of at least 2 fish.
