Designation of Provincially Significant Peatland

Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures (NRIF) has identified an area of Crown land in southeastern Manitoba for protection as a provincially significant peatland. NRIF is proposing this designation to preserve the long-term ecological values of the area while maintaining public access and traditional land uses.

Manitoba is home to millions of hectares of peatlands, which play a critical role in storing carbon, filtering water, reducing flood risks and supporting wildlife such as moose, caribou and waterfowl. Protecting peatlands helps ensure these environmental benefits continue for current and future generations.

Under The Peatlands Stewardship Act, the Manitoba government may designate peatlands as provincially significant to prevent large-scale industrial development such as mining or peat extraction while allowing low-impact recreational activities and research to continue.

The proposed area is approximately 12,000 hectares in size and is located near Moose Lake Provincial Park, Buffalo Point First Nation and Buffalo Bay on Lake of the Woods.

Designation of this peatland would safeguard these natural values while ensuring that Manitobans, including Indigenous communities, can continue to access the area for hunting, trapping, fishing and other traditional and recreational activities.
