Manitoba's Economic Development Strategy
We want Manitoba to be a province where everyone can build a good life – with an affordable cost of living and good paying jobs, driven by a strong, diversified economy. In the face of economic uncertainty driven by tariffs, it’s especially important for Manitoba to have a plan to develop our economy in a way that takes our future into our own hands, and invests in Manitoba workers, businesses, Indigenous communities and families, in our cities and across rural and northern Manitoba.
Economic growth, underpinned by sustained productivity growth, is the means by which Manitoba will be able to realize this vision, maintaining its ability to provide good jobs, vital social services and a high standard of living long into the future.
Manitoba’s economy has long been among the most diversified and stable in Canada, with strong sectors in agriculture, manufacturing, mining, energy, finance and insurance, transportation, and other industries. Emerging technologies and global trends also present new opportunities for economic development in the province. For example, global demand for critical minerals points to opportunities to lever existing strengths into new industries.
Why Focus on the Productivity of Manitoba's Economy?
What is the purpose of these consultations?
Over the last 14 months, the Premier’s Business and Jobs Council has worked to bring together perspectives from business leaders across multiple sectors, Indigenous communities, municipalities, and the public, to ensure that Manitoba is charting the right economic course.
This consultation process is designed to build on that work by sharing key objectives and gathering input on those objectives from Manitobans.
Manitoba’s Economic Development Strategy will aim to provide an enduring roadmap to enhance Manitoba’s productivity and competitiveness in a way that will lead to higher wages for people and grow real per capita income.
Rather than offer short-term solutions that could lose relevance if global demand changes, we propose to focus on policies that will make us resilient into the future. The strategy will aim to speak to diverse sectors at various stages of development – from small businesses in retail, to large, made-in-Manitoba manufacturers, to cutting edge operations on the forefront of agriculture, biotech, and aerospace.
