Provincial Trunk Highway 1 and 1A Interchange Study

The Manitoba government is preparing a functional design for the PTH 1 and PTH 1A Interchange.

The existing interchange west of Portage la Prairie at PTH 1 and PTH 1A was constructed in 1968 as part of the PTH 1W by-pass around the city of Portage la Prairie. With the structure now over 50 years old, Manitoba Infrastructure (MI) has determined that a full structure replacement is required for the following reasons:

  • The existing structure has exceeded its design life and it is not cost effective to rehabilitate the existing structure.
  • The interchange vertical clearance is sub-standard, and a series of recent collisions have caused damage to the bridge structure resulting in closure of all but one of the overpass lanes.
  • Several operational and safety issues were identified at the interchange in a 2013 operational safety review. Interchange modifications will address these issues.

The two main objectives of the PTH 1 and PTH 1A Interchange Study are to:

  1. Prepare a functional design of all roadways within the PTH 1 and PTH 1 A interchange to:
    • Improve traffic operations.
    • Improve safety at ramp entrances and exits.
    • Resolve issues identified in the 2013 operational safety review or provide future strategies to resolve issues.

  2. Develop a preliminary design for a new interchange grade separation structure (bridge) that is compatible with the proposed interchange design.
