Review of the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act

Once every five years, a review of the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act (PIDA) is required to ensure public interest disclosures about wrongdoing are handled appropriately. PIDA facilitates the disclosure and investigation of significant and serious wrongdoing in or relating to most public bodies, and protects persons who make disclosures from reprisal. The Act was amended in 2018 following reviews in 2014 and 2018.

The following 2018 amendments will form a framework for this review:

  • extending protections for school divisions and school districts, municipalities and local government districts.
  • strengthening and clarifying the roles of designated officers and the Ombudsman by providing more effective supports for disclosures and practical mechanisms to address reprisal.
  • enhancing the powers of the Ombudsman to receive and investigate reprisal complaints.
  • strengthening confidentiality by prohibiting the disclosure of the identity of a whistleblower.
  • requiring the Act to be reviewed every five years.

We want to hear from you! Please participate in this survey to provide your input on the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act (PIDA). Your responses must be received no later than August 20th, 2023. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. All submissions will be provided to the reviewer for consideration.
